工業領域對技術、工藝、設備和材料的創新與應用的需求尤為突出。材料作為制造業的基礎，其創新主要體現在對傳統材料技術的升級改造，以及核能、太陽能、風能等新能源技術所使用的材料技術上。在工業生產過程中，材料的更替和工藝的創新，雖然節能空間也很大，但受限于目前的產業結構，更新速度和其節能效果，并不像設備、技術創新一樣，可以帶來立竿見影的效果。而在設備、技術創新中，自動化的產品和技術發揮著重要的作用。以傳統五大高耗能、高污染行業中的電力行業為例：發電側排放二氧化硫達全國排放總量的50%以上，煙塵排放占全國排放量的20%以上，輸電側和配電側由于線損率一直沒有實際改善導致耗能嚴重，按07年我國發電量3萬億千瓦時測算，耗費在輸電及配電側線路及變電設備空載損耗上的電就達到1800多億千瓦時，相當于一座3600萬千瓦火電站的年發電量。所以，輸配電側節能設備的采用就是節能減排最直接見效的領域，包括低損耗 在中國變頻器市場上，目前有90多個變頻器的活躍品牌，其中70%是國內品牌，包括和利時、利德華福、合康億盛等等。但是超過75%的變頻器市場被日本和歐洲的變頻器廠商占領，包括三菱、東芝、日立、松下，歐洲的西門子、ABB、施耐德等等。目前，高壓變頻器市場主要被西門子、ABB、三菱壟斷，包括煉鋼高爐等場合應用的超大功率(8000KW以上)變頻器，軋鋼機、機車牽引等應用的特種變頻器等，而中小容量產品的低端產品則是國產品牌占據優勢。由預測表明，我國變頻器市場在未來10內不會達到飽和，市場潛在容量約1200-1800億元，這為國產變頻器廠商向高端市場沖擊提供了可能性。
變頻調速能量回饋控制技術也是實現節能降耗的重要技術。以電機能耗為例，目前應用較多的是通過變頻器實現變頻調速，這是通過變頻調速技術及其優化控制技術實現“按需功能”，在滿足生產機械速度、轉矩和動態響應要求的前提下，盡量減少變頻裝置的輸入能量，的確實現了節能降耗。而將由生產機械中儲存的動能或勢能轉換而來的電能及時地、高效地“回收”到電網，即通過有源逆變裝置將再生能量回饋到交流電網，實現精密制動，提高電動機的動態性能方面，相比于變頻調速實現節能來說，即便是節能意識較強的企業考慮的也略微少一些。實際上，該技術在能源資源日趨緊張的今天，具有重要的現實意義
